A transformative initiative spearheaded by the visionary leadership of Hon. Sakaja has confirmed the County Government’s commitment to delivering on a crucial promise—providing employment opportunities for the residents of Nairobi. Over the past year, the county government’s efforts have resulted in the creation of nearly 5,000 jobs, marking a significant stride toward fostering economic growth and prosperity in the county.
One ground breaking initiative that has captured attention is the deployment of the Green Army—a force comprising 3,500 mainly youthful soldiers. Beyond its strategic role, this initiative has proven to be a highly effective measure in mitigating youth unemployment. Nelly Odhiambo, a recent recruit to the Green Army, shared her gratitude, stating, “I am grateful to Governor Sakaja for the opportunity. This is my first time opening a bank account and actually using it; I was overjoyed to receive my first salary.” This initiative not only addresses the issue of unemployment but also empowers the youth economically, setting the stage for a more financially inclusive society.
In addition to the Green Army, the Mobility and Works Sector has witnessed a strategic recruitment drive, welcoming 194 new employees, including 114 drivers and 80 plant operators. This forward-looking move is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and bridging gaps as the current workforce approaches retirement age. Mr. Boniface Nyamu, Chief Officer Mobility, emphasized the timeliness of the recruitment, citing the aging demographic of the existing staff. “Most of our current drivers will be over 55 years in the next few years and will be retiring. Had we failed to recruit drivers now, we would have a lot of problems in the future,” he stated.
Mr. Thomas Kassoa, Chairman of the Nairobi City County Public Service Board (NCCPSB), underscored the rationale behind confirming the employment of individuals with previous county experience. “These drivers and operators have been working with us, some under NMS and others as casuals. We decided to confirm them because they have experience and met the qualifications,” he affirmed.
The successful candidates expressed their gratitude for the employment opportunity and acknowledged Governor Sakaja A. Johnson for his unwavering commitment to youth employment. Stanley Maina, who transitioned from NMS to Nairobi City County, shared his journey and thanked Governor Sakaja for providing employment opportunities for city youths. John Lusweti Nyongesa, a former Chief Driver under Nairobi Metropolitan Services, expressed his joy at becoming a permanent and pensionable employee, praising the transparency of the Public Service Board.
Vivian Amoit, a Community Health Promoter is very grateful for the opportunity to serve the Nairobi people. She is also extra motivated by the monthly stipends and full kits that were introduced by the Governor.
Engineer Alex Mwangi the youngest engineer in Nairobi County who as recently employed is grateful to the Governor for the opportunity. He is optimistic about advancing in his career while serving the people of Nairobi through his expertise. His story stands as an inspiration to the youth and a testament to the positive changes being ushered in under the visionary leadership of Governor Sakaja.
