Helping City Farmers to Take Agriculture on New Path

In a bid to revolutionize agriculture within Nairobi County, the Nairobi City County Government led by H.E Governor Sakaja Johnson has embarked on a mission to uplift local farmers and propel the sector into a new era of prosperity. Through a series of strategic schemes and initiatives, the County Government is addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by farmers, ensuring their socio-economic empowerment and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.

These interventions have been carefully tailored to meet the diverse needs of farmers across the city, promoting resilience and growth within the agricultural sector. By providing comprehensive support throughout the farming cycle, including efficient input subsidy programs, Governor Sakaja’s administration is dedicated to enhancing agricultural productivity and increasing farm incomes.

During a recent visit to Miale Farm in Kasarani sub-county, accompanied by the Kasarani Sub-County Livestock Officer, Governor Sakaja highlighted the pivotal role of the Nairobi City County Government in supporting farmers to generate income from both livestock and farming activities. Mr. Ronald Sifuma, the Livestock Officer further reinstated the County Government’s commitment to providing farmers with the necessary information and guidance through well-managed farmers’ groups and coordinated machinery donations.

Modern farm equipment and technology, donated by the Nairobi City County Government, National Government, as well as various donors and non-governmental organizations, are empowering farmers to optimize yields and make informed decisions throughout the agricultural process. This technological advancement reduces waste, increases farm yields, and ultimately leads to higher profits for farmers.

Furthermore, the County Government’s guidance, machinery donations, and farm visits by agriculture officers are enhancing efficiency and productivity, minimizing manual labor requirements, and facilitating the adoption of sustainable farming practices. Among these practices, organic farming methods stand out for their cost-effectiveness and environmentally friendly approach, utilizing natural pest control methods and organic fertilizers to protect both crops and the environment.

Nairobi City County agriculture sector is making significant strides towards prosperity and sustainability through the implementation of innovative technologies, supportive policies, and environmentally conscious farming practices. With ongoing efforts in this direction, the future of Nairobi County agriculture appears promising, poised to play a pivotal role in driving the growth of the Nairobi City County economy.
