Nairobi City County Health Services sector is set to unveil a newborn unit that will house Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU).
Said Governor Sakaja, “In the next two weeks, I shall officially unveil a NICU init at the Mbagathi hospital. This facility will be able to provide the following services;
- -Well, newborn nursery.
- – Special care nursery.
- -Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
- -Regional neonatal intensive-care unit (regional NICU).”
Said Chief Officer Health Services, Geoffrey Mosiria, “This is the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) the county public hospital is launching. It is a sigh of relief to the residents in improving health services”
The state-of-the-art 28 bed capacity department, awaiting to be inaugurated aims at decongesting Mama Lucy Hospital and other county health facilities.
Presently, Mbagathi Hospital serves a total of 1000-1200 on a daily average basis and has a bed capacity of 440, 320 for general ward and 120 for isolation ward that handles patients suffering from cholera.
With the installation of ICU and pediatric facilities, the hospital will be able to avail all emergency needs that require special treatments and offer needful, better services to Nairobi residents.

“This Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is one of its kind and administration of H.E Governor Sakaja Johnson has been keen on installing the unit inorder to offer medical care to newborn babies with tininess related complications. The Governor will launch the unit mid next month (June)” said Mr Mosiria.
Patients who have been seeking ICU and pediatric emergency services from costly private healthcare facilities will be able to access assistance from the county-owned level 5 hospitals, Mbagathi and Mama Lucy.
The 28-bed capacity ICU and pediatric units will have ventilators, non-inversive bypass ventilators, portable ultrasound machines, defibrillators, monitors and other allied equipments.
The Newborn Unit havening the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals will also be launched alongside the ICU facility, specifically to offer intensive medical care to newborn babies with tininess related complications.
The NICU unit comes as a sigh of relief to avail the affordable special services to newborn babies to city dwellers.
Usually, city residents are compelled to look for NICU services from from private wings that mostly run their pockets dry.
The facility will have 24 incubators in Newborn Unit, 20 baby cots and other specialized services.
